Symbols!

Odysseus's wound:
His wound is a symbol of recognizing who Odysseus really is other then an old man, he uses it to prove to his wife and father that he is really Odysseus. The maid also finds out its him because of his scar.
Birds:
The birds symbolize that Odysseus's return and the conflict that is to come. Penelopeia sees an eagle eating her favorite geese. This means her loneliness will come to an end and Odysseus will come back and she will be happy. Also Athena is a bird when the fight in Odysseus's house occurs.
Hades:
After Odysseus killed all those men the book went back to hades and all the souls Odysseus killed. Agameanon talks about the loyalty and how Achilies was betrayed. They souls of the dead men remind us how he defeted everyone in his house. The first time he goes to hades it shows how everyone is misserable without him at home and how his mother killed herself because his father was so depressed he wasnt home. He also learns about the people in his past and all the disloyalty that led to Agamenon's death.

Book 20

Characters: Odysseus, Eurynome, Athena, Zeus, Eurymachos, Theoclymenos, Aglelaos Damastorides, Antinoos, Ctesippos, Melanthios, Philotois, Amphinomos, Drover, Philositios, weakest barley grinder, Eurycleia.

Everyone was getting together to eat in the morning. Telemachos announces he is leaving because everyone will die while outside people are whorshiping Apollo, then they sit down to eat breakfast.

Theme: Hospitaliy

It is the start of the feast where to battle starts and it leads to the final battle.

book 19

Characters: Athena, Odysseus, Telemachos, Penelophia, Amphithea, Autolycos, Eurynome, Eurycleia, Melantho.

Odysseus talks to Penelophia and Eurycleia finds out that the old stranger is Odysseus.

Theme: Loyalty

This chapter is important because you see how Loyal Penelophia is, Eurycleia knows her master is back.

book 18

Odysseus fights the town beggar Iros. The suitors gave Penelophia gifts after she came down stairs. Eurymachos got mad at Odysseus and through a stool at him.

Theme: Hospitality

This chapter is important because it shows how rude and unhospital they are and make you dislike them even more.

This chapter is important because it is the beginning of their plan to kill the suitors. Odysseus goes home.

Telemachos goes home and Odysseus goes home with the swineherd and they eat dinner together at his house. Odysseus's dog dies. Odysseus is told to go around and beg. Antinoos is rude to him.

Themes: Hospitality, The swineherd gave Odysseus dinner.
